Form I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification
In accordance with the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986, Virginia Tech is committed to verifying, and in some instances reverifying, the identity and eligibility of our employees to work in the United States through the Form I-9 process. Completion of this federally mandated form must be done by both citizens and non-citizens in order to work in the United States. The form has two sections:
- Section 1, which must be completed by the employee on or before their first day of employment.
- Section 2, which must be completed by the employer within three business days after the employee’s first day of employment.
When completing the Form I-9, employees must provide original documentation to their employers to show their identity and authorization to work. More information on the types of documents that can be used to fulfill this requirement can be found on the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service site.
**Failure to complete the Form I-9 within the required timeframe outlined above may lead to termination or delay of employment.**
