A/P Faculty Process

The Administrative and Professional (A/P) Faculty Activity Report (FAR) is transitioning to PageUp on a phased timeline across the university. Contact your HR representative to confirm your area's current process.

FAR Cycle Phases

The A/P FAR follows three phases throughout the year: Plan, Touchpoints, and Assessment. These phases create a rhythm, so meaningful conversations happen throughout the year, not just at the end.

Planning

The Plan phase is the foundation of the A/P FAR process. In collaboration with their supervisor, the A/P faculty member highlights key job duties, sets professional goals aligned with priorities, and identifies development and service opportunities for the year. Plans require approval from both the A/P faculty member and their supervisor.

Steps in this Phase:

  • Planning (edit and approval)
Touchpoints

During the Touchpoints phase, A/P faculty members and their supervisors meet regularly to discuss progress and document the year as it unfolds. Notes are recorded in the system and visible to both parties, creating a shared record of progress and priorities. A/P faculty members may also add unplanned goals, development activities, and service contributions as the year evolves.

Steps in this Phase:

  • Touchpoints
Assessment

The Assessment phase invites the A/P faculty member to reflect on the year's work before engaging in a review conversation where both the employee and supervisor share their perspectives. It is an opportunity to celebrate achievements, discuss challenges, and identify lessons learned.

Steps in this Phase:

  • Self-Assessment (A/P faculty member only)
  • Manager Input and Discussion (supervisor only)
  • Acknowledgement (A/P faculty member only)

FAR Components

The FAR is organized around four primary components that are present across all three phases — job duties, professional goals, development & growth, and additional contributions & service — together capturing the full scope of the A/P faculty member's contributions throughout the year.

The full list of FAR tabs is:

Provides an overview of the current step, what to expect, and any important guidance before beginning.

The core responsibilities of the A/P faculty member's role that serve as the foundation for Touchpoint conversations throughout the year. Each job duty is rated individually during the Assessment phase.

The priorities and outcomes the A/P faculty member and supervisor identify together at the start of the year, which are then revisited at each Touchpoint big picture conversation. Each goal is rated individually during the Assessment phase.

Activities and opportunities that build the A/P faculty member's professional skills and knowledge beyond current role requirements.

The contributions the A/P faculty member makes to the university, their profession, and the broader Virginia Tech community beyond their primary job duties.
