Optional Benefits Enrollment

During open enrollment, Virginia Tech employees have the opportunity to enroll in, make changes to, or cancel their benefits, including Legal Resources, Aflac, and the newly introduced Identity Theft Protection.

Sept. 1 – 30, 2024 is the open enrollment period for both Legal Resources and Aflac.

Virginia Tech also provides New York Life and Securian Optional Term Life Insurance options, while the Commonwealth of Virginia offers Genworth Long-Term Care coverage. Although enrollment or changes to these benefits aren't limited to the open enrollment period, now is an excellent time to review the options available to you and your family.

All of these benefits are available to enhance Virginia Tech employees’ benefits package.  Virtual sessions have been scheduled in August and September with vendors to provide you with detailed information on the selections available.

Legal Resources 

Legal Resources offers protection to employees, spouses, and dependent children (up to age 19 or 23, if enrolled as a full-time student) from paying the high cost of attorney fees associated with everyday life events. Please note that a one-year commitment is required of all enrollees.

New Legal Resources Benefit - Identity Theft Protection

Legal Resources' Identity Protection Plan provides you and your family with peace of mind so you can focus on what matters most. In a world full of constant threats to our cyber security, trusted identity protection is essential for everyone.

Individual coverage is $8 per month and family coverage is $18 per month. You will receive the following protections:

  • Monitor - Keep your identity secure with credit monitoring and personal information monitoring.
  • Control - Certified identity theft specialists help educate and ensure your identity is safe by strengthening your digital security.
  • Alert - Receive early warnings allowing you to act fast.
  • Resolve - White glove resolution experts handle every detail in restoring your identity

Aflac

Aflac is a supplemental insurance plan that pays cash benefits to help with expenses due to injury or illness. The benefits are pre-determined and paid regardless of any other insurance that an individual may have. Employees choose the policy(ies) that best suit their needs and premiums are payroll deducted.

Drop-In Sessions:  Sessions will take place at the North End Center, 300 Turner St. NW Blacksburg, VA 24061 . Employees can visit with AFLAC representatives at anytime during the allotted time frames below. Sign up is not required to attend.

New York Life

The Employee Whole Life Program is Guaranteed Issue. The benefits include no medical questions or exams, offered through payroll deduction, coverage available for family members, a lifetime of protection, stays with you if you change jobs or retire, the ability to earn dividends, access to cash value through policy loans, and premiums won't increase. Check your eligibility requirements here.

Genworth Voluntary Group Long Term Care

Long term care insurance helps pay for care and service expenses related to a long term care event such as nursing home care or at-home care to assist with bathing, eating or other activities of daily living. Long term care insurance can help you maintain control over the kind of care you receive and where you receive that care. For more information, call Genworth Life toll-free at 866-859-6060 or visit Genworth's website. (Note: If you are a state employee in VRS Plan 1, VRS Plan 2, or the Hybrid Retirement Plan, you are covered under the VSDP Long-Term Care Plan at no cost to you.)

Securian

Eligible employees may sign up for the Optional Group Life Insurance plan through Securian Financial. There is no open enrollment period for Securian’s term life insurance. Employees can enroll anytime.  If you are enrolling for the first time and it is 31 days or more since your start date, you will be required to submit evidence of insurability.
